Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello
Over the holidays we had family in town, and when people visit we go out and do the sightseeing thing. I love travel and exploring but we don’t do it as much as I’d like. Guests make a great excuse for getting out of the house!
One of our excursions led us to Monticello near Charlottesville, VA. It was quite a drive from our home in Chesapeake, but in my opinion, worth it. I’ve wanted to visit Monticello for ages – ever since we saw Villa Almerico Capra, also known as La Rotonda near Verona, Italy, which was the inspiration for Thomas Jefferson’s home.
I was even more inspired to visit Monticello after reading America’s First Daughter which is about Jefferson’s eldest daughter, Martha “Patsy” Jefferson Randolph. While this book is considered historical fiction, much of the book was based on Thomas Jefferson’s letters. Its an enthralling read – one I couldn’t put down. If you haven’t read it, pick it up for a glimpse at how it might have been during an amazing era in American history.
Below are a few of my snapshots from Monticello.
If you visit Monticello be forewarned that photos are not allowed inside the home. I was pretty bummed about this, but at least I got a few good shots of the exterior.
Based on the size of the parking lot, this place can get pretty crazy in the summer. However, mid-December was a great time to visit. I’m a big fan of off-season travel!
If you find yourself traveling through Virginia and enjoy exploring history, then please check out Monticello. It is worth the trip.
