Reviving an Old Raw File
I’m a bit of a digital hoarder and have managed to preserve the raw files from my early days of shooting with a DSLR. My skills back then, both behind the camera and in post, were limited, and I often ended up with photos that needed a bit of work. I did my best with the tools I had at the time, but with new technology (and a few new skills), I can re-process some of those old photos and come up with something really good.
Let’s take this image of the Duomo in Catania, Sicily, as an example. I photographed this image from a ferry as we headed toward the Italy mainland. Between the lack of a stabilized camera or lens and the ship’s rocking, my photo was slightly blurry.
After a few tone and color corrections in Adobe Camera Raw, I opened the image in Topaz Photo AI. I enabled both Remove Noise and Sharpen. The results are amazing.
The app removed the noise that had been emphasized by adding clarity and opening the shadows while preserving detail. It also sharpened the important details in the image, making the architecture really stand out.
