      Hi Judy,

According to their brochure, Swannanoa Palace is currently owned by Skyline Swannanoa, Inc.

The University of Science and Philosophy, a foundation started by Walter & Lao Russell left the property in 1998 and gave up their lease.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my post! I hope you enjoyed the article and photos.

  17. Kyle on July 25, 2016 at 4:47 pm

Hi, any chance you found a solution? I’m dumping Zenfolio entirely (been there since 2007), and have the same issue with the blog being trapped. It’s unbelievable how far behind they are now; rated dead last for portfolio hosts. Squarespace and Format appear to be the top two, so I’ve started rebuilding in Squarespace (love it so far!). Thanks!

    • Angela Andrieux on July 25, 2016 at 7:41 pm

Hi Kyle, Unfortunately my solution isn’t a great one. I built a WordPress site using a subdomain (blog.angelandrieux.com) and am little by little copy/pasting my old posts from Zenfolio. With over 460 posts held hostage on Zenfolio’s server it is a huge chore. The only upside is that it gives me the opportunity to refresh old content/links and improve my SEO.

Once I have a post copied over I do an HTML 301 redirect from the old post to the new version. I’ve been using http://www.rapidtables.com/web/tools/redirect-generator.htm to generate the HTML codes. I then use the source code view in Zenfolio to insert the html 301 direct at the top of the post. It isn’t the BEST way to do a 301 redirect but from the research I’ve done it is the only option for directing a blog post on Zenfolio to a new URL.

I’m glad to hear that you are loving Squarespace. I’ve heard good things. I’m still using Zenfolio for my portfolio but I’ve been researching other options. I’ll check out Format, too. I’ve even considered building up galleries on my WordPress site since my theme supports it. That still leaves the issue of print/product sales, but I’ve been looking into Fine Art America for that. Pros & cons there, too.

Let me know if you have any other thoughts/suggestions. Cheers!

Honestly Im about to jump ship purely because I can’t export. I’ve had a couple of companies ask for my review blogs to publish on their sites, these are my sponsors and I can’t just grab it. I’m going to have to re write it, very frustrating as I though id at least be able to transfer the text.

    • Angela Andrieux on August 9, 2016 at 9:27 am

I agree. Its extremely frustrating. I’m exploring other options as well, in addition to moving my old posts over to WordPress (post by post, copy & paste). What other platforms are you considering? So far, WordPress is working well. I’m just not sure what to do about my portfolio and product sales. Let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions. Cheers!

I’m moving to wordpress.org for my website. Thankfully, I only have about 30 or so blog posts to move, and still have all the photos on my computer, so I’m going to copy and paste all my text and re-upload the photographs to match. Tedious, but the seo is so so bad on zenfolio that I cannot justify staying there and watch as my competition get found on google and get hired when I could have been hired had my work been seen!

    • Angela Andrieux on August 28, 2016 at 8:44 am

Good luck with moving your data. As you say, its tedious, but worth it! I’m moving around 460 posts. Uff.

I did write a followup article, not sure if you saw it, on how to move your Zenfolio blog content to WordPress. I included how to do a html meta tag redirect which will help your existing traffic find your new site (as long as your Zenfolio site is still up and running). https://angelaandrieux.com/2016/08/how-to-migrate-your-blog-from-zenfolio-to-wordpress/ I hope it is helpful to you!

    Hi Angela,

Thanks for the interesting post and beautiful photos. I also inherited an Olympus 35Ia in remarkable condition. I’m in the process of learning how it operates. The shutter and aperture are self explanatory. Do you know what the R, D, A switch on top does?

    Thanks!

    • Angela Andrieux on September 6, 2016 at 9:51 pm

Hi Garth, Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment! I had a lot of fun capturing the photos of my grandpa’s Olympus 35. I’ll have to do a bit more research on the RDA switch. I have no idea what it does and the web searches I’ve done haven’t proved helpful. I’ll have to see if I by chance have the original manual. Stay tuned! :-)

      • Kelly on September 16, 2016 at 10:33 am

        Angela,

I recently acquired an Olympus 35 at an estate sale and was curious about it’s history too. I searched the web and had dated the camera from around 1948-1955 with only one difference…. The letters E.P on top of the viewfinder. To narrow down which model I had I decided to reach out to Olympus directly (the EP was throwing me off). Olympus was kind enough to respond to my inquiry (asked for pictures) and responded with the below. If you have the manual, please scan and share it here (I’m also searching).

Thank you for your reply with attached images.

        We appreciate your time.

Regarding your inquiry, this model is Olympus 35IVa (1953)
and you can see more info listed link below.

        http://www.olympus-global.com/en/corc/history/camera/popup/35mm_35iva.html

Concerning the E.P mark on top of the view finder, probably
E.P meant the shopping center called “Exchange Post”
on American military base back then.

Therefore this model may have sold only military base in
        Japan in around 1953.

For your information, you can see more history of our camera
        from following link below.

        http://www.olympus-global.com/en/corc/history/camera/lineup/chronicle/

We hope that you will enjoy your Olympus camera continuously
for a long time to come.

Hi Angela, I tried the upgrade path for my Aurora HDR Pro with the serial number, but it only offered the $89 upgrade option instead of the $49. Can this be fixed? BTW, I got to pin on my son’s LCDR insignia a few weeks ago. Mike

    • Angela Andrieux on September 28, 2016 at 7:39 am

      Hi Michael,
Sorry you are having issues with the upgrade!! I saw a comment from someone else on FB who was having the same issue with the upgrade (not associated with one of my links). I’ll email my contact at Macphun now and get it sorted out for you.
I saw the photo on FB of you pinning your son. What an honor and special moment for you both to share!!
I’ll be in touch when I have more info for you.

    • Angela Andrieux on October 14, 2016 at 8:29 pm

No worries :) I think Photomatix is still a great program but it’s been eclipsed & surpassed by Aurora HDR which wasn’t around when I wrote this article.

Aurora HDR is my go-to these days, but it is Mac only, so I think Photomatix is still a great option for the Windows crowd. However I’ve heard rumors that Aurora is working on a Windows version. We’ll see what happens!

Angela, great blog. I’m just getting into the HDR piece of photography and was in market to shop Photomatrix. I almost purchased but saw a few of your comparisons for best HDR software. That last comment sold me onto Aurora. I demo’d it and I love it. Thank you!

  38. cp dukes on November 10, 2016 at 7:41 pm

I use a Mac. Without a good and useable photo management module Luminar is not competitive with Lightroom CC. Will this happen? When? I worry also about the nondestructive save not being readable in other programs.

    • Angela Andrieux on November 11, 2016 at 3:47 pm

cp dukes – Luminar definitely will not replace Lightroom…at least, not yet. I’ve been told that Macphun will possibly add a photo management aspect to Luminar in a future release. If that happens it could be a game changer for some. Especially those who don’t want to be tied to Adobe’s monthly subscriptions.

I do share your concern about the nondestructive files not being readable by Photoshop, etc. I really hope they move to a TIFF or PSD format with layers intact.

For now, I will say that after working with the pre-release, Luminar is a very capable photo editor. I truly enjoyed working the photo that I used in this blog post. If I wasn’t already entrenched in the Adobe infrastructure, and was using Apple Photos to manage my library, I’d be chomping at the bit for Luminar’s release. :-)

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment!

I also want to blog about my travel photography with pictures, stories, videos and equipment/ product links ie; Amazon. Any suggestions? Also looking at squarespace. Thanks!

    • Angela Andrieux on December 11, 2016 at 12:43 pm

Hi Mike, I’m glad the article was helpful! I would encourage you to check out Imagely. It is managed WordPress hosting for photographers. WP is certainly more involved than a platform like Zenfolio or Squarespace, but you have complete control and far more options. While I’m not yet an Imagely customer, I likely will be in the next year when my Zenfolio subscription ends and I’ve finished moving my old blog posts over to WP. I’ve been impressed with their WordPress education (via their podcast) and from what I know so far, they provide great support. Let me know what you go with, and why. Happy Holidays!

Great write-up Angela. I am in the process of moving from SmugMug to WordPress 100%, but the ever elusive options for sharing, proofing, and selling on WordPress to match what the hosting sites offer are hard to put together. NextGenPro is the closest so far, but I am diving into the SEO more before I go all in with NG pro.

As for Squarespace, it is just a blog that will integrate with SmugMug, so not a replacement for your online hosting IMO. You end up paying for both. You also have the issue of not being able to export your blog when you decide to make a change later, just like with Zenfolio.

    • Angela Andrieux on January 2, 2017 at 2:48 pm

Hi Dee, I’ve heard great things about NextGenPro. While I’ve been steadily moving my old posts from Zenfolio to WP, my galleries are still on Zenfolio. I hope to change that in a few months and NextGenPro is at the top of my list for building out my portfolio on WP.

I wasn’t aware that Squarespace didn’t have export options. That is good to know! I looked seriously at their service before I settled on WordPress, and while better than Zenfolio’s blogging options, it still didn’t have the flexibility I was looking for.

Best of luck on your SmugMug to WP migration & Happy New Year!

You touched on favorite subject matter I love to photography. I grew up on the beaches of New York and have visited many areas in New England all the way up the coast and old deserted structures are every where, but not only beaches. I love to get to old factories that are factories no more as well as abandoned areas in the mountains of Virginia and Maryland. The silk mill in Maryland was one of my favorites.

I love your image and the process softwear you used to finalize the image. I do not use Adobe any more (personal) and On1 Raw is still too unstable for me (but there may be light at the end of that tunnel) but I do love Aurora and Capture One and Luminar when it is not sucking up my ram. :))

    • Angela Andrieux on February 4, 2017 at 2:31 pm

Hi Elliot – Thank you for the kind words about my photo! I also love photographing abandoned places. I saw several others I want to explore on Virginia’s eastern shore and I hope to head back up that way soon, possibly with a few folks from my local camera club. I would love to know more about the abandoned factories in the Virginia mountains! If you have GPS coordinates or addresses and are willing to share, please let me know.

As for On1 – I’m confident that they are working through their stability issues. I believe they are putting out a significant update sometime this month. I’m hopeful that it’ll resolve some of my issues and issues I know others are having.

  108. Skylar on February 18, 2017 at 4:45 pm

    Hi Angela!
Thank you for this write up. We just read through all of this dialogue. We’re currently using Zenfolio for our website, hosting and blogging. We’ve just begun to utilize our blog as a marketing tool (or trying to) and realized how bad it really it! Very limited options for customization, SEO and it’s not user friendly. Where are you now in this process? And what do you think of Imagely?

We were thinking of sticking with hosting on Zenfolio because we enjoy the client/proofing/purchasing/print buying marketplace but the blog is really throwing us for a loop. Hopefully there’s a way to integrate a different kind of blog or something else into a Zenfolio site but we’re not sure. If not, we may need a complete overhaul. Thanks in advance!

    Skylar & Devin

    • Angela Andrieux on February 18, 2017 at 4:55 pm

      Hi Skylar & Devin,

I just finished moving my blog posts (manually copy/paste) from Zenfolio to WordPress last week. It was a tedious process, but my WP blog has so much more functionality and the SEO kicks Zenfolio’s butt.

I’m just getting started with Imagely and am in process of shifting my WP hosting from GoDaddy to Imagely. So far their support has been great. Since I’m moving my entire portfolio, online store, etc. to WP the transition is going to take awhile. Its a much bigger learning curve than setting up a site with a service like Zenfolio. That said, I’m looking forward to having complete control over my site, suppliers, and prices.

On the portfolio end, I considered sticking with Zenfolio because of the ease, but at the end of the day their SEO is inferior to a WP site. Plus, then I would have had to keep up and manage two sites. I’ve also learned that having your site all located at your main URL is better for SEO as well.

As for options for integrating Zenfolio with WP – sadly there are none. I searched high and low.

Let me know which route you end up taking and how it goes. And if there are any other questions I can answer, please let me know!

      Cheers!

    Hey Angie

Thanks so much for this blog. I’ve created a new website and I’m in the process of moving all my blog content over from Zenfolio for exactly the same reasons. Don’t get me wrong, I loved them for a good 4 years but I want more control over my site and their SEO just doesn’t cut it. This blog is just what I need to redirect some pages until I can redirect the whole lot. Thank you!

Don’t confuse Aurora HDR with Aurora HDR Pro. Pro only will edit RAW files whereas Aurora HDR will only edit JPGs. Aurora HDR is only available in the OS X App Store, whereas the Pro version is available on the Macphun website. :-)

    • Angela Andrieux on March 24, 2017 at 7:08 am

Hi Daniel, I’ll have to double-check with my contacts at Macphun, but I believe when they made the update to the Aurora HDR 2017 version the pro/non-pro options were eliminated. If you go to the Mac app store the price is the same as visiting the Macphun website. :)

    • Angela Andrieux on March 24, 2017 at 5:02 pm

Hi Daniel, I heard back from my contact at Macphun and confirmed that the pro/non-pro monikers for Aurora HDR are no longer used in the latest iteration – Aurora HDR 2017 (which is what I wrote about in the article above).

However, the version for sale in the Mac app store is slightly different in that it doesn’t allow for plugin installation for Lightroom/Photoshop/etc. because of limitations from Apple. However, anyone who purchases Aurora HDR 2017 from the Mac App Store can contact Macphun support and receive the non-app store version free of charge. Cheers!

Hello Angela, I’ve been using Zenfolio for the last 8 years and recently switched it to cover my photobooth business about 6 or 7 months ago. I have a WordPress site but haven’t been too active with it. Which template in WordPress are you using that allows galleries? I need one that allows free downloads. My galleries and Blog posts are less than 25 so switching won’t be too daunting.
    Thanks!

    • Angela Andrieux on July 5, 2017 at 11:47 am

Hi Steve, Thanks for your comment! I’m using the Gridsby theme from Modern Themes and I use the NextGen Gallery Pro plugin for my galleries and slideshows. Hi, Angela. Your experience is similar to mine. I’m still in the free trial, and I’m looking for another host. I had faster page load speeds with a shared host, and that is saying something.

    • Angela Andrieux on August 31, 2017 at 10:42 am

Hi Tim, I’m sorry to hear that you are experiencing some of the same frustrations! Check out Siteground for hosting. I went with GoDaddy and now I’m not so thrilled with that decision either. Their support is great but GoDaddy’s Managed Hosting removes a lot of functionality and caused a lot of problems with my site. I ended up going back to their shared hosting, which is slower, but at least my site is working correctly now. I joined a local WordPress meetup (I wish I’d found them sooner!!) and Siteground is a favorite host for a lot of those folks. I did talk to Siteground about moving my site, but I can’t get my $$ back from GoDaddy so I’m stuck for now. Good luck with your site! If you get a chance, let me know which direction end up going. Cheers!

      • Tim on September 8, 2017 at 11:43 am

I’ve gone back to Squarespace for now, but I’m still looking at photography themes for WordPress because I still believe it is a superior platform to Squarespace. I have pretty much decided, though, that if/when I go back to WordPress, I’m going to use LightningBase as my host. I’ve read nothing but good things about them, and so far, my questions have been answered within minutes by them (I am wary that this would change once they have made the sale). I’m looking more at managed hosting because of the supposed speed advantage.

Oh, one more thing, I was looking at the Imagely themes, and now I can’t find any mention of their hosting on the site.

        • Angela Andrieux on September 10, 2017 at 1:15 pm

          Hi Tim,

After tackling the learning curve of WordPress I can see the allure of Squarespace! It does have its limitations, though. I’m using Gridsby Pro from Modern Themes and I like it. I did create a child theme to make some customizations, though.

I just took a peek at the Imagely site, and you’re right! It looks like they aren’t offering their hosting services anymore. I wonder if that is a permanent change…I do like their NextGenPro plugin (I’m using it on my site) and their themes are pretty. Perhaps they’ve decided to put more effort into their core strengths. We shall see.

          Thanks for the update!

I use Photomatix Pro with LR and Raw files all the time. No need to go outside of LR. PM Pro saves the result as a TIFF which is fine by me.
Perhaps it is because I am on a PC and have the latest version of LR that supports my Raw format is why it works for me but not the author.

    • Angela Andrieux on September 27, 2017 at 3:19 pm

Hi TJ, Thanks for your comment! I’m using the latest versions of both LR and Photomatix (on a Mac). I can easily export from LR to Photomatix but it exports my RAW files as TIFFs. I’d love to know a bit more about your process and how you are taking your RAW files directly from LR to Photomatix without exporting them as TIFFs. Maybe I missed something. Thanks again for taking the time to stop by! -Angela

    • Angela Andrieux on September 27, 2017 at 8:16 pm

Hi Again TJ, I reached out to the Photomatix team and confirmed that when you use the LR plugin (Mac or Windows) you are converting your RAW files to TIF when you send them to Photomatix and they include any adjustments you may have made in LR. Thanks for prompting me to do some research. I learned something new, too! According to the folks at Photomatix/HDRSoft using the LR/ACR RAW conversion is usually preferable. Cheers! -Angela

    Hi Angela,

I’ve just discovered your blog. Interesting insight on the deghosting. It’s something I’ve been looking for – something that will cope with trees, leaves, flags. It looks like Photomatix will – have you had a look at Aurora 2018 in this regard yet? Also On1? Would be interested to hear your thoughts.

    Alex

    • Angela Andrieux on October 19, 2017 at 9:31 am

Hi Alex, Thanks for checking out my site and taking the time to comment!

Both Photomatix 6 and Aurora HDR 2018 have deghosting – the unique feature with Photomatix is that you can apply it selectively whereas Aurora, On1, Lightroom’s HDR Merge, etc. apply it globally.

Aurora HDR 2018 does a good job with the deghosting HOWEVER because it is a global adjustment it can limit the amount of processing you do before you start seeing halos and other artifacts.

I’ve also worked a bit with the On1 Beta that has HDR and I think it has a ways to go. The alignment/deghosting just isn’t up to par with the other software out there. That said, it is a beta version so it might be improved by the time the production version is released.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers! -Angela

I downloaded Aurora and it was terrific – until they sent me an update. Now the program freezes when I try to save the photo and it often crashes my entire computer. I do not know what that update did, but it ruined the program. I have demanded a refund even though I prefer it to Photomatix as it does not support RAW photos. I just cannot risk it ruining my computer.

    • Angela Andrieux on October 31, 2017 at 9:54 am

Hi Virginia – I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been having issues with Aurora HDR! Which version are you using? Mac or PC? v.2018? If you haven’t already, please send an email to support@aurorahdr.com and their awesome tech team will help you sort out the issue. They can also help with the refund if that is what you desire.

As for Photomatix Pro – it does support RAW photos, you just have to load them directly instead of through a plugin. However, although they have RAW support I recommend using Lightroom (or another RAW converter of your choice) and then exporting the TIFFs to Photomatix. Not all RAW converters are created equally and in my opinion Adobe does a better job with RAW conversion.

    Hi Angela
My ambition is to find a product to replace the usual Adobe suspects and I am following up your review for what looks like a likely contender.

    • Angela Andrieux on December 27, 2017 at 10:22 am

Hi Geoffrey – I think Topaz Studio would make a great Adobe replacement. Other options to look into are Luminar by Skylum (formerly Macphun) and On1 Photo RAW. All are excellent and offer free trials so you can see which is the best fit for your workflow.

  171. Bill on February 10, 2018 at 10:48 pm

I don’t see how Aurora 2018 wins when it looses detail in a HDR image and introduces unwanted contrast before making final edits. Will Aurora add that loss of detail back when you try to remove contrast?

    • Angela Andrieux on February 11, 2018 at 7:16 pm

Hi Bill – What detail loss are you referring to? As far as the contrast – you can certainly pull back on the contrast to flatten the image if that is the look you are going for. As I said in the article, it was a tight race and the results are very subjective. I see the result from Aurora getting me closer to a finished piece of art without as much jumping around to other apps/plugins whereas Photomatix needs a lot of further stylization before I consider a piece finished. At the end of the day, if you like that Photomatix version better, then that is the tool you should go with :)

  173. Anthony BRENELIERE on March 24, 2018 at 7:31 pm

Aurora HDR has a limitation: it cannot save images bigger than 15000 pixels on the long side. It is very constraining for producing larges panorama (or 360 degres photospheres). , where HDR is the only way to overcome the high light ratios.

    • Angela Andrieux on March 25, 2018 at 5:45 pm

I can see how that would be frustrating! I don’t work with panos often so I haven’t encountered that issue. I do know that the folks at Skylum are working on increasing the max file size for both Aurora HDR and Luminar. Not sure when it will be updated, but they are aware and working on it.

  174. Lee on April 10, 2018 at 6:37 pm

I have both but have gone now to almost exclusively Aurora. I actually use the app for more than multi-image HDR. I find the sliders and the layers are easier to use than similar stuff in PS and my workflow is much faster (with some stuff, not all!).

    • Angela Andrieux on April 11, 2018 at 1:36 pm

Hi Lee, Thanks for taking the time to read/comment! I agree, Aurora is great for single exposure edits as well. It is a very powerful app (and definitely easier to use than PS)!!

    Appreciated it.

  176. Nick Buchko on May 8, 2018 at 10:18 pm

Good story and photo. While the 70-200 mm lens would certainly produce some great close-ups, the 16-35 mm lens gives a good perspective of exactly the terrain where the wreck is beached, a perspective that would probably not have occurred with the longer lens. Great job.

    • Angela Andrieux on May 9, 2018 at 9:36 am

Hi Nick – Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the photo & story. The perspective would have definitely been different with a longer lens – I am glad I got this shot. Now I just need to go back on a non-rainy day, climb down the bluff, and get better close up photos. :) I hope to do that this summer!

  177. Hal on May 11, 2018 at 8:02 pm

You might suggest to the developers of On1 as well as Luminar that some of us senior photogs have trouble reading gray print on a black background. I realize this is the ‘modern’ look – but if you can’t see the buttons and sliders and read the print, you don’t buy the program. It would not be that difficult to incorporate a choice of skins with more contrast.

    • Angela Andrieux on May 12, 2018 at 5:23 pm

Hi Hal, I will definitely pass on that feedback to both On1 and Skylum. Being able to see the controls is pretty darn important!!

  178. Colin Stock on May 12, 2018 at 12:51 pm

I read your review with interest. I would like to pick up a point of error though. You can export if you have Photomatix Pro 6 intstalled as a plug-in you can directly export your raw files from Lightroom into Photomatix. It will generate tiffs on the fly and return the processed tiff to LR once finished. The resulting HDR tiff will form part of the original group, assuming the original files have been grouped in LR first of course. It does work on the unedited files though, no LR edits are carried over. Apart from that, the review was excellent. It would be interesting to learn why you pick one over the other for a particular edit as you stated you use both. Thank you for writing the review.

    • Angela Andrieux on May 12, 2018 at 5:21 pm

Hi Colin, Thanks for pointing that out! I do have Photomatix Pro 6 installed, but I missed that you can now export the RAW files when I updated this review. I’ll be sure to get that corrected.

As for which HDR app I choose, it really depends on the photo. These days I usually prefer Aurora HDR because the results are more natural to my eye and there are a lot more editing options within the app (with Photomatix I almost always end up in other plugins for stylistic edits), but if I’m not getting the result I want I’ll cancel out of the process and see if I can do better with Photomatix :)

      • Nikhil on May 29, 2019 at 4:52 pm

Did you ever go back to explore? I just got back from a sunset shoot on Monday evening? The ship is a lot rustier than it was last year obviously and is losing some of the details that you could make out last year (I went briefly last summer as well). But on Monday I got down to the beach during high tide by walking along the bluff to the left of the wreck, walking down into the 15-20 foot ravine (there’s a path which is no problem if you have good grip on your shoes) and then following the ravine out onto the beach

        • Angela Andrieux on May 29, 2019 at 5:56 pm

Hi Nikhil – I haven’t made it back to the shipwreck yet, but I will one of these days! I’m sure time and the saltwater are taking their tolls. I’d love to see the images you got. Drop a link if you get a chance :-)

For those who seek a replacement for Adobe softwares may want to try out Serif’s Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer. Serif is also coming out with a page layout program that will replace inDesign. I made the change to Affinity and I’m super happy with the results I’m getting. They have great pricing for an excellent product. I just started using Topaz Studio and have access to the plugins via Affinity Photo as well. :-)

  184. Ed on August 2, 2018 at 8:59 am

I have been using Photomatix for many years and decided to switch to Aurora. At the end of the day both turned out images that were very close. Nothing earth shattering over the other. Recently though I upgraded to the Aurora 2018 which was free. I can no longer use Aurora 2018 because it requires your video cards to be compatible with Open GL3.3 or better. My expensive AMD cards don’t support this and I’m not planning on upgrading to use Aurora so I have now went back to Photomatix

    • Angela Andrieux on August 3, 2018 at 8:54 am

Hi Ed – I’m sorry to hear that you were affected by the new OpenGL 3.3 requirement, but am glad to hear you also get good results from Photomatix. It is a good application, as well.

  186. Clive on August 10, 2018 at 5:17 am

Very nice breakdown of the main points.
I do mostly Real Estate photography where lighting and room space vary considerably along with the
everyday “window blow out” situation.Bracketing is the simplest and fastes ways of shooting. In Munich where i work
the time for post is incredibly tight with only a matter of hours to complete say 10-15 shots before going on-line.
There are, I think, 3 versions of Photomatix .Basic Essentials and Pro.Which in your opinion would be the best to purchase
considering the type and informational character of my Photos?
Thanks in advance for your time.
    Kind regards Clive

    • Angela Andrieux on August 10, 2018 at 11:54 am

Hi Clive – I’m glad the article was helpful! For real estate work I suggest purchasing the Pro version for the following reasons:

-Unlimited number of bracketed photos per set (in real estate work, depending on the light I’ve had to use 7-9 exposures to get detail in all highlights/shadows. Being limited to 5 (as is the case with the Essentials version) would be too limiting

-Settings/presets geared toward real estate. The Pro version has a Fusion/Interior method not present in the Essentials version

-Batch processing. If you are needing to work quickly batch processing can make a big difference and this is possible with the Pro version, but not in essentials.

You can see a complete comparison here: https://www.hdrsoft.com/order/photomatix-pro-essentials-features-compare.html

There are several other important features in the Pro version, but those 3 I believe would make a big difference to you. What do you think?

      • Dave Sanders on March 13, 2020 at 9:18 am

Is Photomatix Pro 6 any faster at processing than 5? 5 was at least 45 seconds faster than 3.

        • Angela Andrieux on March 13, 2020 at 11:26 am

Hi Dave – It has been quite a while since I last used Photomatix Pro 5 and I no longer have it installed on my computer, but if my recollection serves, v6 is faster. It also has some great features that weren’t available in 5. Overall, I’d say it I certainly worth the upgrade (or at least downloading the trial version to see how it works for you).

  188. Kerri on August 20, 2018 at 10:34 am

I SO agree with their support being a joke (if not something worse)! They are terrible – and outwardly aggressive, too. I contacted them with a simple request and they told me they couldn’t help but that I should contact them over social media (customer support 101 says that is a terrible idea LOL). Anyways, they sent an automated survey for me to rank them and I did and voiced the issue with their support and they replied with a verbal attack because I had rated them poorly. Please do not ask for feedback if you are not going to listen and if you are going to outwardly assault the person who has made use of the tool that you put in front of them.

Not sure about the rest of the company, but their support team is NOT empathetic, kind, or helpful. Hope they will reevaluate their hiring choices in support in the future. This really ruined my perception of their brand and I will be the first to recommend against.

    • Angela Andrieux on August 20, 2018 at 10:57 am

Hi Kerri – I’m sorry you had such a horrible experience with Imagely! Not long after I wrote this article they ceased advertising hosting options, but I recently read that they are back in the game…apparently nothing has changed, except maybe gotten worse based on your recap. Luckily their NextGen plugin is pretty solid so I haven’t had to go to support, but I dread the day I need to.

I used to love going to this place in the summer as a kid. We would go I. The slides, ride the dune buggies, go karts, and bumper boats. This was the main thing I wanted to do each summer whenever we arrived. I drove by today and saw the same things your photos have shown me, a park taken over by nature. It did bring back the 80’s for me. I was able to tell my wife all about it and she could envision what I was telling her. Thanks for the awesome pics.

  190. Iulian on September 18, 2018 at 3:17 pm

I don’t get it. You create an automated photoeditor, which should do everything by itsown. You process a batch of raws automatically and you can go to sleep, right? Wrong! You have to go to another editor to do the first ever step of editing: crop. How the heck did they release Photolemur without cropping option’ is way out of my understanding.

    • Angela Andrieux on September 18, 2018 at 3:47 pm

Hi Iulian – A crop function in Photolemur would be nice – but I think they are catering to the customer who does little-to-no processing but still wants to make their photos better. If you’re looking or something more fully featured I suggest checking out Luminar 2018. It has give you a LOT more creative control (including cropping). :)

  191. Eligio Bucciarelli on September 20, 2018 at 6:28 pm

    Hi Angela,

I was going to contact you by email, but I thought my question might be of some benefit to your readers.

Your Ecommerce purchase and checkout proceedre looks very similar to that of the PhotoCrati theme by Imagely. Is that part of the NextGen Pro Gallery? I’m currently building a site using the PhotoCrati WordPress theme and I find that the Ecommerce module is very lightweight. For example, 1) it only supports one shipping rate that can be either a fixed rate or a percentage of the total purchase. This is too simple as it does not take into account different sizes, weights and distances which all factor into an accurate shipping cost. 2) Similarly, the sales tax support only allows for one tax rate. Considering I only have one nexus, I need only to be concerned with sales tax for one state; but the state has 62 counties all with varying rates. The state tax is all the same, but there is no way to automatically parse the purchasers location and include the local county taxes. Other Ecommerce options, such as WooCommerce, handle this both internally or with third party plugin options. I did notice that you seem to have a flat shipping charge and I was wondering if you find it sufficient to cover all situations. As for the sales tax, how do you handle that?

As for my experience with Imagely’s support of the theme, it’s similar to your experience with support for the hosting. I’ve asked a couple of very simple questions of where to locate certain aspects of the HTML so to make some simple tweaks; tweaks that I would make and I did not request for them to make. I was told to hire a developer. It seems to be a boilerplate response.

    Regards,
    Eligio

    • Angela Andrieux on September 21, 2018 at 10:54 am

Hi Eligio – You are correct – I’m running NextGen Pro on my site. I agree that the eCommerce aspect is lightweight, but for now it works reasonably well for me.

For pricing, I made a very detailed spreadsheet with prices, markups, tax, and shipping. I work primarily with a lab that has a very reasonable rate, even for fairly large images so I just calculate that into my price. For instance – If shipping starts at $9.95, but on a larger piece that goes up to $19.95 I’ll add an extra $10 to my price for the artwork and keep the shipping rate constant. It is not a perfect system, but for now it works. For extremely large pieces I do custom quotes so I can work in shipping/tax on a case-by-case basis.

WooCommerce does have some better options available, but the cost was substantially higher when I last researched it.

As for the sales tax – I find this aspect very frustrating especially with upcoming rules that look like sales tax will need to be charged everywhere, regardless of nexus. At the moment I will pay the sales tax out of my profit so I stay in compliance, but it is far from ideal. NextGenPro could be a lot better in this area.

I have been to Swannoa many times over the decades but for sure, it is decidedly eerie. Then in the 90’s Lao Russell’s group took it over but couldn’t afford to maintain it. Great trivia; the stained glass window of Mrs. Dooley is by Tiffany. The drawing room features silk wall covering as well as a mural of Bertrand Russell standing on a bridge with Jesus and FDR. Most recently, I heard that a corporation purchased it and planned to restore it and turn into a resort. I hope someone saves this amazing architecture. Great pics, thanks for sharing!

Nice series of images. I especially like the last one and how you progressively got closer and closer to your subject. I fell in love with macro photography many years ago and over the past couple of years I’ve become enamored with abstract macro. There is just something about getting so close that your subject begins to breakdown into lines, colors, and shapes. Found your site while searching for what other photographers are doing and/or have done in my favorite genre.

    • Angela Andrieux on January 20, 2019 at 1:46 pm

Hi Colin – Thanks so much for your kind words. It means a lot. As for my processing, I do try to get it right in-camera, but I really love post processing. Lightroom is currently (and has been since v1) my home base. I use a bunch of different plugins depending on the look I’m going for, but these days I spend most of my time in Luminar and Aurora. Since I started working with Skylum I’ve gotten more and more comfortable with their software and it often provides the easiest method for my stylistic edits because of the familiarity.

    • Angela Andrieux on March 25, 2019 at 1:36 pm

Hi Joe – I’m not sure about how the underlying tech in Topaz AI Clear is built – that would be a great question for the folks at Topaz Labs. As for running their apps on Linux, I don’t think it is officially supported, but I believe folks have had success with virtualization of MacOS or Windows on Linux and then utilizing apps like Topaz.

Apart from their hosting and the blog issue that you had regarding the title, would you recommend their themes in general?

    • Angela Andrieux on April 8, 2019 at 12:32 pm

Hi Sam – Apart from the less-than-stellar theme support, their themes seem to be reasonably well-built. However, after my experience I ceased using their themes (in 2017 when I wrote this article) so I can’t speak to the current quality.

hi, does flex work with lightroom 6

    • Angela Andrieux on April 12, 2019 at 4:40 pm

Hi Diarmuid – Yes, I believe it does. However I have not tested it myself (I use Lightroom Classic CC). I suggest downloading the free 14 day trial here and making sure that it is a good fit for your workflow before purchasing.

      • David on April 13, 2019 at 6:31 am

to use with older LR under FIle – export with presets to Flex I have LR 5 others way’s don’t work

    • ricardo on June 7, 2019 at 4:29 pm

Perfect Ângela all I wanted and asked but….I would love open it from Bridge….and I didi not find the link 14 dys trial…only 60days money back

      • Angela Andrieux on June 7, 2019 at 6:46 pm

Hi Ricardo – If you go to https://angelaandrieux.com/recommends/luminar-flex and then mouse over the word Luminar in the top menu bar, you’ll see several options. In the third column you’ll see a link to “Download Luminar Flex Trial”.

As for Bridge – you can right-click on an image and choose Open With > Luminar Flex. Once you’re done editing choose File > Export and save the new version to the original folder. It should then appear back in bridge next to the original.

Have been trying to download Flex (have Luminar 3) for free but it’s not working thus far. I use Apple Photos. When logged into Skylum – My Software – there’s this section: Luminar Flex, Purchase 1/11/2017. Click on Download link. Then Download for Mac. Accept licensing agreement which goes to: Installation: Luminar Flex. Under destination Ps is highlighted (I don’t have it) so click change application, which brings up my list of applications. However, I’m not allowed to actually click on Photos. So, tried downloading Installation: Luminar Flex as it’s highlighted (as previously stated, Ps. As expected, I got notice that I first had to install said application. What am I doing wrong? Your help would be most welcome. Thank you!

Can this house be purchased and restored?

    • Angela Andrieux on June 5, 2019 at 10:58 am

Hi Steve – Swannanoa is currently owned by Skyline Swannanoa Inc. and is maintained for historical tours and events. While I don’t think they are restoring the property, they are keeping it from decaying further. I’m not sure if it is for sale, but you could contact them at https://skyline-swannanoa-inc.square.site/home to inquire. Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Angela, can this be done on lightroom mobile?

    • Angela Andrieux on June 8, 2019 at 1:58 pm

Hi Chris – You can add a text watermark using Lightroom mobile, but it doesn’t have the option to use a PNG file for a graphic watermark (yet). Hopefully they’ll add this in the future. I know I’d use it! For now, the folks at Photologo recommend using Union (an iOS app) for adding your Photologo on an iOS device.

  216. Eileen Teti on June 12, 2019 at 10:09 am

I just spoke with a local at the thrift store next door; she says the owners had asked too much money for the property, that is why it did not sell for all of this time. However, it is going to be torn down soon. We were told this area is unincorporated, so nothing could be done about the property until now. I remember when it was still open, as my family and I have been visiting the Outer Banks for many years now. It was a shame to see it looking worse each year. ( I, too, enjoy photography and took some photos right before getting the information from the thrift store employee, so I am glad I got them when I did!).

    • Angela Andrieux on June 12, 2019 at 11:06 am

Thanks for the info! That makes me glad to have photographed it while I had the chance, too. I’d love to see what it is looking like now. Do you have your photos shared online anywhere? If so – reply with the link and I’ll have a look. :) Thanks!

Hello. I just happened upon your site. I’m curious about photo logo and found your comments and review. What a stroke of luck for me. I hope you’re still blogging and running your business. I understand personal loss. It’s the hardest experience to recover from. I pray you’re doing well and that you’re stronger each day. I’d like to communicate with you about your site and your logo. I like how it looks. I’m in need of building a logo and would like your guidance.

Hi Mildred – Thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment! I’m still here and appreciate your words of support. I’m happy to share some info about my logo! I got it from a company called Photologo. I reviewed them here: https://angelaandrieux.com/photologo-review/. If you have any specific questions about my experience with them, please let me know! Have a wonderful day :-)

Hi Angela, So how do I get my Nik collection to work in Luminar?

    • Angela Andrieux on July 2, 2019 at 11:42 am

Hi Michael – Hope you’re doing well! In Luminar 3 for Mac (as a standalone, not using it as a plugin to other apps) go to the Edit menu > Plugins > and select the Nik app of your choice. If you don’t see them there you can also go to Plugins > Other and navigate to an installed plugin to open it. If you run into any problems let me know and I can email you instructions for manually installing them.

Can Sharpen AI be used as a plugin for Lightroom?

  221. Kevin La Rue on July 12, 2019 at 12:47 am

Nice post, Angela! One thing I’m really liking is the way that Accent AI 2.0 does a waaayyyyy better job of dealing with skin tones on photos with people. I know you mention “human-aware” above but the double-click is that the Skylum engineers did a whole lotta work on teaching the AI to recognize people and apply adjustments more selectively.

    • Angela Andrieux on July 12, 2019 at 11:13 am

Thanks, Kev! I really like the examples I’ve seen with Accent AI 2.0 on Portraits. It is pretty amazing! I’ll see if I can dig up some portraits for my next article. I don’t shoot many of them :-)

  222. JOHN on July 16, 2019 at 8:51 pm

    hi,
is it possible to do multiple simultaneous ‘exports’ to flex from LR and process them?

    • Angela Andrieux on July 17, 2019 at 11:32 am

Hi John – Theoretically, yes. BUT I’ve been told the process is buggy at the moment. The procedure is to go into the full Export dialog (File > Export), and click on either Edit a copy with Lightroom adjustments or Open Source Files in the Luminar Flex dropdown on the left. From there you can customize the Export settings by choosing a preset (Look) that you’d like to have applied. When it works, this method only allows for applying a Look (preset), not for individually editing each photo.

  224. Sebastiano on July 20, 2019 at 7:13 pm

Hi, you are right, I’m in a similar situation. Some year ago I had more free time and I used Joomla for my blog and Coppermine for the huge photogallery. When I discovered Zenfolio I thought it was the perfect solution to work only on the content and not on the maintenance. But as you say the blog tool of Zenfolio is terrible (and the SEO of the single pictures too) and in these years no improvementes were made. I’m also planning to move to another more flexible platform.

    • Angela Andrieux on July 23, 2019 at 5:54 pm

Hi Sebastiano – So sorry to hear that you’re in a similar situation. I’ve found WordPress to be a great platform for me. It does take more work to get set up, but the benefit is that you can customize it however you wish and aren’t limited by another company’s vision.

  225. Rebecca Eusey on July 24, 2019 at 10:51 pm

  227. Ron Lawrence on August 6, 2019 at 10:08 pm

Why should I trust Skylum again? The PC version of 3 needs tons of work and I can’t even use sky replacement as that means its not my own work, my competition entries will be voided. I don’t trust Skylum to tell me the truth now. We heard “coming soon” and “next version” but we are getting crap.

    • Angela Andrieux on August 6, 2019 at 10:22 pm

Hi Ron – As a Mac user I can’t personally speak about issues with the Windows version. What I can say is that I know a lot of Windows users who are very happy with Luminar 3…but that can depend on a lot of factors, including your hardware setup and which features they make use of in their workflow. If L3 isn’t working well for you I urge you to reach out to Skylum’s support (www.skylum.com/support) and discuss any problems you have.

As for the Sky Replacement coming in Luminar 4 – I’ve seen conflicting reports about being able to use your own skies. If this is a big concern for you then I suggest holding off on pre-ordering until more info is available. They are still several months out from the release so a lot can change. However, if you do choose to pre-order their 60 day money back guarantee doesn’t start its countdown until after L4 launches so you’ll have time to thoroughly test it. I hope that helps you make the choice that is best for you and your workflow. If I can answer any other questions for you, please let me know!

    • Kim Austin on August 6, 2019 at 10:57 pm

Thanks for this Angela. I’ll come back here for future updates – too much flying around in FB groups to really get an informed view. Cheers!

      • Angela Andrieux on August 7, 2019 at 11:20 am

Hi Kim – You’re welcome! I’ll do my best to cut through the clutter.

    • Angela Andrieux on August 7, 2019 at 11:25 am

Hi Ron – A quick followup for you: I just read in the comments of a Photofocus blog article that “You will be able to use your own skies, but what you’ll be able to use will be limited.” You can read the entire article here: https://photofocus.com/software/skylum-cto-dima-sytnik-on-replacing-skies/

I’ve updated the post to include official word that YES! you’ll be able to use your own high-resolution sky images with the AI Sky Replacement tool.

      • Ron Lawrence on August 8, 2019 at 10:44 pm

Thanks for looking for me. I did reach out to Skylum. I basically got: we hear you but nothing is going to change. For PC users, the DAM is a joke. The LR migration tool keeps getting pushed back. We can’t use third party plugins, and a lot of other things. I bought Luminar based on promises. For two years now it’s been “In a later update”, “in the next release” or “we’re working on other priorities “. I realize your position, but it’s so bad that one of the Luminar pro photographers has give a “don’t buy” recommendation! That’s not good. I just dont trust them any longer. I really wanted them to succeed but this cavalier attitude toward their customers doesn’t set well with a lot of us.
I really suggest you talk to some of the other PC users. We’re tired of being treated as second class. Rant over.

    • Angela Andrieux on September 3, 2019 at 7:49 pm

Hi Giu – Unless Zenfolio has changed something, Zenfolio only keeps the 10 most recent posts in the RSS feed and there was no way to change it. So…with several years worth of posts that sadly didn’t work for me.

      • Giu on September 4, 2019 at 10:18 am

Hi Giu – That’s great! I’m glad to hear that Zenfolio made it a bit easier. I wrote this article back in 2016, and at that time moving my posts was a nightmare that took months. Thanks for sharing the tools that you used! I hope that others who stumble across this article find them helpful.

          • Giu on September 4, 2019 at 4:17 pm

Yes! When I was looking for a solution, your blog was one of the first results (maybe the only one) to address that problem, so I hope that someone that is facing the same issue could know that there is another option to solve it.

            Thank you!
            Giu

          • Amy Hirschi on June 11, 2020 at 8:56 am

Giu do you have a tutorial on how this worked? I’m trying this plugin and can’t get it to come up with the feed.

          • Angela Andrieux on June 11, 2020 at 12:09 pm

Hi Amy – I wrote this article and transitioned my blog from Zenfolio to WordPress back in 2016 so some things may have changed. Which plugin are you referring to? The only one I mention in the article is Yoast SEO. Yoast is great for helping improve SEO, but doesn’t do anything with your RSS feed. If you can give me a bit more info about what you’re trying to accomplish I’ll do my best to help.

Angela, I am a freelance photographer and I do a bit of work in real estate, I came across this article as I often use Aurora, but I wanted to see how other photographers use it. This process/workflow is a game changer!! I just used it for a client and they absolutely love it!! The images really stand out from regular real estate photographers. I’ll be using this technique for future clients, thanks so much!!

    • Angela Andrieux on October 3, 2019 at 12:12 am

Hi Evan – You’re going to love it! For all of the images in this article I used the Luminar 4 beta as a plugin with Lightroom and it worked flawlessly on my mid-2015 MacBook Pro.

  231. Ron Lawrence on October 2, 2019 at 10:19 pm

Are you reviewing the Mac or Windows version? I’ll never buy another Skylum product because they promised us parity in the products before a new paid version was released. Luminar 3 for Windows STILL isn’t working correctly. I don’t see how I can, with any faith, buy the next version.

    • Angela Andrieux on October 3, 2019 at 12:10 am

Hi Ron – I’m running the Luminar 4 beta on a mid-2015 MacBook Pro. I haven’t personally tried the Windows version, but I haven’t heard any complaints from other testers I’ve chatted with. As for parity, a lot of the remaining issues between the Windows and Mac version have been addressed in Luminar 4 from my understanding. However, there will always be some differences (like Mac users use cmd-Z to undo while Windows users use ctrl-Z) just because of how each OS works. I hope you change your mind and give Luminar 4 a chance – either with the free trial after the launch or with the pre-order (the 30 day satisfaction guarantee timer doesn’t start until the launch). If you do move forward with it feel free to reach out to me with any questions and I’ll do what I can to get answers for you.

    • Angela Andrieux on October 21, 2019 at 11:06 am

I drove down to VA Beach for the Neptune Festival mainly to listen to the Rondels play on a 17th street stage. I just took photos of people on the boardwalk, beach and stopped at Fort Monroe for some sunset photos prior to driving back to Richmond. I’m looking to spending more time on my picture taking. But I have a bunch of photos I took about 3 years ago for a graduation party. I was asked to do this due and agreed. I messed up the entire take. One mistake I put them on my work computer. No one expects to get the photos now. I need to make amends.
    Can you help?

    • Angela Andrieux on December 16, 2019 at 11:07 am

    Hi, Angela,
I’m a photographer from San Luis Obispo, and would love to photograph this shipwreck. I’m guessing it is off of Estero Bluffs. Any suggestions of how to find it? Thanks!

    • Angela Andrieux on January 7, 2020 at 2:01 pm

Hi Jim – Its pretty easy to find. If you’re heading north on hwy 1, take the very last exit into Cayucos, then take a pretty immediate right into a dirt parking lot. From there you’ll likely see the mast peeking above the bluffs. There are trails to hike down to get closer. If it is low tide and you want to go down to the rocks/beach, then you’ll need to take the trail on the north end of the parking lot, and then walk down. You can scramble up and down the ravine near the bottom as well, but its a bit tougher than just taking the other trail! Have fun and if you post the photos online, please share a link! I’d love to see what you capture!

Angela – Have you done any cross-comparisons of the noise reduction in Luminar 4 (based on Skylum’s former dedicated tool Noiseless) and Topaz AI? Thanks!

    • Angela Andrieux on March 9, 2020 at 8:31 pm

Hi Kevin – I contemplated putting it in this article (I have a version of this image done with Luminar as well), but Luminar sadly didn’t fare well in the comparison. For this one task, it is hard to beat the one click results from DeNoise AI. I loved Noiseless, but have never been able to get the same results with Luminar’s noise reduction.

  252. Alan on March 10, 2020 at 12:19 am

In the Lightroom example you kept the Detail slider at 50. Would the results improve by telling the software that you wanted more details retained?

    • Angela Andrieux on March 10, 2020 at 9:30 am

Hi Alan – I did try that, but by further increasing the Detail slider in Lightroom, it re-introduced the noise back into the flatter areas of the photograph. The settings I used were the best results I was able to get with that image. It is tough when you’re working with super-fine detail like feather.

  255. Kop on June 8, 2020 at 9:49 pm

    Hi,

I have been testing DeNoise AI, and been happily surprised about the results.

One question though: it seems that Admin permissions are required to run the software. It can not be run with regular user permissions (both with Mac and Windows, Mac version I tested few months ago, Windows last weekend). Do you experience the same?

    • Angela Andrieux on June 9, 2020 at 7:55 am

Hi Kop – Glad to hear that DeNoise AI is working well for you! With regard to permissions, I run my machine (a Mac) with a single user account that has admin permissions so I’ve never had an issue. With most software it is necessary to have admin permissions to install, but not necessarily to run the software. I would recommend checking with Topaz support if you’re running into trouble with a user account that does not have admin permissions.

Hello, I received the PNG files for a logo from Photologo, but when I put into lightroom, When I try to add the PNG into logo I get the little perforated box but nothing shows up. then I purchased Photopolish and try to add the PNG files from Photologo into the watermark area and get an error message, error loading image. I am able to pull other png and jpg files from my hard drive that I’ve used before for watermarks that I myself created but the 4 from Photologo do not work. Also cannot open the pdf they sent me for the instructions. I suspect there is something wrong with the files they sent me?

    • Angela Andrieux on June 25, 2020 at 12:23 pm

Hi Heather – It sounds like the files are corrupted. I would try downloading them again and see if that helps. If the problem persists, I recommend contacting Photologo support.

  257. Geoff Kingstpn on June 25, 2020 at 8:00 am

I have been using Topaz Denoise for a month or so and still find that on some occasions Lightroom does a better job. One thing has been puzzling, and I cannot seems to get an answer, is where in the workflow should I use DeNoise?

    1. After setting the White Balance and before cropping?
    2. Before making any global adjustments?
    3. Crop and make all global adjustments the DeNoise?
    4. Whe is the best time to use Topaz Sharpen AI?

    Sorry for al the questions

    • Angela Andrieux on June 25, 2020 at 12:31 pm

Hi Geoff – I typically use DeNoise AI or Sharpen AI, but rarely both on a given image. Both applications sharpen and reduce noise and I use these apps to solve specific problems that I was unable to resolve in Lightroom.

I use DeNoise AI when I have a lot of high ISO noise or I’ve created a lot of noise by opening up deep, dark shadows. I use Sharpen AI when my image is just slightly out of focus due to camera shake or to fix focus if my plane of focus is a bit off.

I will typically run either program after I’ve made my global adjustments. There are a few exceptions, but if the sharpness and noise are so bad that I need to deal with those issue before anything else, I probably won’t have much editing leeway with the image anyway because I’m starting with a poor quality image.

I hope that helps! Let me know if I can further clarify.

Hi Sarah – The $49 option for batch processing via Lightroom only. It doesn’t include the full version of Photomatix.

Went to one of the Fireworks baseball games for the Colorado Rockies. Tripod sounds nice but as a non-registered, non-professional, tripods were/are prohibited.
    What to do?
Looped my camera neck strap around my leg, sat on it, and used isometric tension techniques, similar to pistol shooting, to steady the camera for the several second exposures.

    • Angela Andrieux on July 6, 2020 at 8:01 am

Very clever!! Did you get some good shots?

I’ve found a small tabletop tripod or Platypod can be a great tool when full size tripods aren’t allowed.

  261. Sharang Satish on July 29, 2020 at 4:23 am

Hi, wouldn’t you be able to get a lot of detail back in the feathers of the Egret by using an adjustment brush over the bird, and reducing luminance and increasing sharpness?
Just trying to eliminate all options before purchasing DeNoise AI :)
    Thanks.

    • Angela Andrieux on August 3, 2020 at 1:30 pm

Sure! You could do that. The trade off is manual work. You can get decent results in Lightroom alone. The benefit of DeNoise AI is that the AI does most of the work for you and I find that it typically gives me better results. Though the difference is probably minimal unless you are pixel peeping. I hope that helps!

  262. Diane on August 6, 2020 at 4:58 pm

Thank you so much Angela, for the coupon code. Sharpen AI was on sale and I was still able to make the purchase with the code. I have been wanting to make this purchase for quite some time now. Your code made it possible!

    • Angela Andrieux on August 6, 2020 at 5:19 pm

Hi Diane – So happy that the code helped! You’re going to be so glad you added Sharpen AI to your toolbox! It is such a great application.

  267. Ed on October 23, 2020 at 7:42 pm

Being a data scientist I wish people would stop using the marketing term AI. This NOT AI it is machine learning and pattern mapping. The problem with it is those parameters are set by the programmers Thus all work to taking an image to the standards the programmers felt were ‘right’.

It is amazing technology but not AI.

    • Angela Andrieux on October 26, 2020 at 2:35 pm

Hi Ed – Seeing as you are an expert in that field I can see how imprecise use of the term “AI” can be frustrating. I don’t claim to have a full understanding of the technology (merely a user of the software), but can you tell me in layman’s terms where machine learning and AI begins? It seems to me to be a spectrum where the smarter the machine learning becomes, the more it could be construed as AI. Thoughts? It is an interesting conversation and one I’ve seen many questions about, but don’t have the answers.

  268. Andrew McKinney on October 26, 2020 at 7:51 pm

Hi Angela …. I love them all! …. no favorites. I like the contrast between the 2 crunchy/dynamic images, and the 2 dreamy effects. Nicely done!

Do I assume that you used some kind of motion blur with the camera to get the dreamy effect?

    Kind regards
    Andrew

    • Angela Andrieux on October 27, 2020 at 10:36 am

Hi Andrew – I’m glad you enjoyed the photos! The ones that are more dreamy were manipulated in post. I used a combo of Topaz Studio 2 (smudge effect) and Photoshop to erase a few distractions and a bit more targeted smudging. Topaz Studio is my go-to for artsy effects. :)

  269. Nick Buchko on October 26, 2020 at 8:11 pm

Hi Angela. I particularly like the “Sunflower Dreams” picture. I like the swirls that you managed to capture. Did you twist the camera while taking the picture? Do you mind sharing how you captured this image?

    Thanks

    • Angela Andrieux on October 27, 2020 at 10:19 am

Hi Nick – Thanks for letting me know your favorite!! That image was just a simple photo, nothing fancy done in camera. I took it into Topaz Studio and used the Smudge tool a couple of times on different areas, and then on to Photoshop where I erased a few distractions and did a bit more selective smudging. :) It was a fun, artistic, project!

  273. Forrest on December 5, 2020 at 10:07 am

They work with a company called paddle that does all of there customer service and ordering. This makes it so you cannot speak directly with the artist or anyone else at photologo. The people at paddle know noting about the photologo company or thier services. This makes it impossible to make acurate revisions or ask meaningfull questions about process. I have tried twice to get a usable logo from photologo and it has been one of the most frustrating commercial experiences in recent history. I would suggest finding an actualy graphic artist and get them to make a signiture for your biz. These logos are generic and impersonal. If you try it out for yourself you will see how little control you have over yhe final product. Dont be fooled be this retailer, they are not custon signitures!

    • Angela Andrieux on December 7, 2020 at 12:36 pm

Hi Forrest – I’m bummed to hear that your experience with Photologo wasn’t great. I’ve now ordered 2 logos from them and asked for revisions each time. Both times they were responsive and got the job done in a reasonable amount of time. I’ve also sent a couple of questions to their support team and they’ve always replied and been helpful. Sure a custom graphic designer would also be a great option, but quite a lot more costly. I hope you eventually have a logo that you like!

Excellent easy to follow walkthrough. I don’t have PS, but I do have Elements 2020 and it looks like it would work in that too. I was also intrigued to not that you have a Canon R6. On my “should I shouldn’t I” upgrade from Fuji XT3 to full frame….just concerned by the low 20mp sensor and loss of IQ and cropping capabilities which seems to defeat the object of FF
Thanks again for your very well explained tutorial….I will be experimenting with this!

    • Angela Andrieux on January 20, 2021 at 10:41 am

Hi Nigel – I’m glad you enjoyed the tutorial! You should be able to do the same thing with PS Elements. Let me know how it goes!

As for the Canon R6, I upgrade from the Canon 6D which is also 20mp. I never felt limited by it and have printed up to a 48×72 canvas with stunning results. There are also some great tools out there for increasing resolution if you need to crop aggressively (I use Topaz Gigapixel AI) and it is remarkable what it can do. I have to say that I’m extremely happy with my investment in the R6. It is a fabulous piece of equipment!

Over the past twelve months (maybe call it the ‘Covid era’?) or so, I’ve tested and compared numerous softwares as I’ve not been able to go out and grab new images. Lightroom has been surpassed on many levels. You’ve identified Topaz here and, personally, I would agree. I don’t think I’ve found a decent comparison of Topaz vs Inpixio which is pretty much like for like. I’ve largely stopped using Lightroom and tend to move between Luminar AI, Topaz, On1 and Dx0. I love your honesty here with regards to Luminar vs Topaz. It would be all too easy to exaggerate Luminars performance due to you working with them but I think it does Luminar more favours than ever due to that.
I think though that Adobe are not ones to not take the game to the next level so I imagine they are going to be pulling some new version of LR before long.

    • Angela Andrieux on March 30, 2021 at 9:46 am

Hi Roy – I’m glad you found the review helpful! Topaz DeNoise is my go-to for anything with extensive noise/grain. As far as comparisons and reviews, honesty is always the best policy! :) Luminar AI is a great app (not just saying that because I work for Skylum) but there are a lot of other great apps out there and, so far, I haven’t found a single app that does everything the best. Maybe one day!

    • Angela Andrieux on September 6, 2021 at 7:47 pm

Thanks so much, Zay! I have a board that I picked up at my local home improvement store’s lumber section (Lowes) that is a white board on one side (like a dry ease board) and black on the other. I had it cut down in store to be the same size as my Replica Surfaces https://www.replicasurfaces.com/ so I can mix and match with the other patterns/textures that I have. It works great and was very inexpensive.

      • ZAY REYNODS on September 15, 2021 at 6:38 pm

Thanks for sharing the news, Angela. I am definitely curious about AI Compositing and the Relight feature. I know layers are super-powerful, and I know how to use them, I just don’t like to rely on them *all the time* to get things done. So, in my opinion, it will be interesting to see how much Luminar Neo will depend on layers to deliver max creativity.

    • Angela Andrieux on September 9, 2021 at 3:33 pm

I don’t use layers all of the time, either, but the ability to use tools multiple times makes me happy! It is one of the features from Luminar 4 that miss the most. It’s exciting to see where it goes and to be a part of it!

I was so eayer to sign up for this I think I pressed the wrong button!!! I have paid €59 for 2 seats which I assumed was for existing customers but it looks like there is a better deal…..oh well

    • Angela Andrieux on September 11, 2021 at 10:41 am

Hi Nigel! With layers coming, 3rd party plugin support shouldn’t be far behind. From what I know right now, it isn’t expected at the initial release, but will very likely be added soon after. As for your purchase price, 2 seats with the loyalty discount should have been $49 USD – I think that should also be €49, but I’m not sure about that. Reach out to support@skylum.com and they can take care of a partial refund for you.

Angela, I am aware of the new releases of Replica Surfaces later this week. Having never owned any of the surfaces, do you recommend the storage sleeves to protect the surfaces or ae they not needed? Thank you for your assistance.

    • Angela Andrieux on September 21, 2021 at 5:20 pm

Hi Zay – I haven’t purchased the sleeves myself. They come in a sleeve of sorts for shipping and I’ve kept and reused those. They’ll fall apart on me one day and then I’ll probably buy the nicer ones, but for now, the shipping ones work just fine for me. I also keep my surfaces in a soft-sided art portfolio that I purchased before they created their own bag. My bag is a bit longer than the ideal size, but it works and was a fraction of the cost of the bag they sell (but their bag does look very nice!).

Articles I read indicated the county offered $1.6 million for the 12-14.5 acres in 2014. That seems too low for this area, even with clean up costs. The property includes acreage across NC Hwy 12, not just the amusement park.

Articles are clear that the whole story hasn’t been published yet.

Unfortunately, yes – Backblaze requires an account for each computer. If you’re running multiple machines, the cost can definitely add up. Hi Doug – So sorry to hear that Zenfolio still hasn’t made an improvement in this area! Best of luck with moving your blog!

    Angela,

Wow. I was there when Lao Russell and dog would access make afternoon appearances on the front lawn. A rare event. She signed one of her books for me, “Why You Cannot Die” and at that time there was great chatter in the local village as to what “really” went on in the Palace. The brochure (at that time) was a priceless piece of facts vs fiction and bordered on … no, I’d rather not say in print.

I am planning to try and return next month with friends and hope it is still open …

    GREAT pictures.

I’ve done it! You need “Import XML and RSS Feeds” by ‘Moove’ it imported ~50 post perfectly with the images, dates, tags, the whole lot!

    • Angela Andrieux on August 15, 2022 at 3:38 pm

That’s awesome! I’m glad there is a tool out there now that makes it easier.

I am so relieved to read your comment. Do you have a link for this?

  311. Norma Meyers on October 18, 2022 at 4:27 pm

Angela could you explain how to do this step?
See the Light – Evaluate the contrast range in the scene to determine the number of necessary exposures (3, 5, 7 or more).

    • Angela Andrieux on October 20, 2022 at 8:42 am

Hi Norma – The best way to do this is by watching the histogram on your camera. Your darkest shot should not have any blown out highlights (shown on the histogram by the graph touching the right side) and your brightest shot should not have any blocked up shadows (shown on the histogram by the graph touching the left side).

In a scene with minimal contrast between the light and dark areas, you might be able to accomplish this with three shots (or even a single exposure with modern cameras). In high-contrast scenes, for example, photographing an interior with a window on a bright sunny day, you’ll likely need 5, 7, or more exposures to ensure you have a brackets with detail in all of the brightest and darkest areas.

I had to get a new computer with Windows 11 and in the process, I lost all of my Topaz programs. I may have originally got them with the email address of shepley@roadrunner.com
    I had Star Effects,,,,Detail….Simplify….photoFXlab….Adjust……ReMask….ReStyle….Texture Effects.
I still have the License Keys for all of them.
Please help me get them back on my computer. Thanks

Sorry but I mis-typed my phone number in case you need it. The correct # is 330-225-8335

Hi David – I recommend reaching out to Topaz Labs support directly for installation help. You should be able to download all of your purchased software from the Topaz Labs website after you log in. However, it is worth noting that most of the apps you listed are quite old and unfortunately no longer supported, so they may not work on Windows 11. Please be sure to check their system requirements before downloading.

I used to work and live there back in I think in 95. They were still building the bungee jump which I helped with. My main job was the track with the Honda Odyssey’s . Brings back so many great memories. Sad to see it in this state.

    • Angela Andrieux on April 10, 2023 at 8:22 am

Hi James – Thanks for the comment! These photos were taken a few years ago, sadly, probably in worse shape now. I’m glad you have good memories there, though!

I’ve had the Everyday v. 1 (which served me all over the world, including a 3-day side trip for ALL gear, clothing, power cords, etc.) and now am sporting a v. 2. The improvements over what I already thought was a near-perfect bag are excellent. Besides what you listed, I enjoy the magnetic backpack straps – keeps things tidy for when I’ve put it down for a moment and also when sliding down on a suitcase handle. Thanks for the review!

    • Angela Andrieux on August 20, 2023 at 4:33 pm

What’s do you like best about the v2? Do you have the 20L or 30L?
