The Glorious Twists & Turns of Highway 1

Highway 1 on the west coast of the United States is one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the world. It runs mostly along bluffs and beaches at the edge of the Pacific Ocean.
Somewhere between Jenner and Mendocino
During my last California visit my mom and I drove the section between Jenner and Mendocino. We weren’t in a hurry so we pulled off many times to take in the view or check out various points of interest such as Fort Ross and the Point Arena Lighthouse (more about those in upcoming posts).
One of the things that fascinates me about this stretch of Highway is the surrounding terrain, and how the road meanders through it. At one of the high points we pulled off and could see the road crisscrossing he hillsides and valley below. It was spellbinding.
I took quite a few photos from this vantage point – here are a few of my favorites:

A bit further down the road we’d pulled off again and I noticed these lovely curves going into a more heavily forested area, with the fog just grazing the hilltops.

Highway 1 is a most fabulous place to drive…and pause…and drive…and pause. I can’t wait for my next adventure up the California coast. There is always more to see!
