A Fresh Take with Aurora HDR 2017 and Luminar

Since I haven’t been out to shoot much lately, I thought I’d take a look back at my captures thus far in 2016.

I stumbled across a photograph from the Great Bridge Battlefield Park – a 3-exposure handheld HDR that I’d originally processed in Aurora HDR (the original version) along with some help from Lightroom and Photoshop. I really liked it at the time, but admittedly it came out a bit too HDR-ish. Take a look at my original processing here. It is the last photo in the post.

Today I decided to reprocess it with Aurora HDR 2017 (the new version) and add my stylistic touches with Luminar (read my review of Luminar here).

Aurora HDR 2017 and Luminar Workflow

My process was quite simple. First I exported the RAW files from Lightroom to Aurora HDR 2017 (learn why I export the RAW files and not TIFFs here). In Aurora I enabled alignment, chromatic aberration removal, and color denoise. I also enabled low ghost reduction using the ‘0’ EV image.

Next, I clicked on the reset settings button (just to be sure), lowered the “HDR Look” slider, then applied the changes and returned to Lightroom.

To finish the photo, I jumped from Lightroom to Luminar with a TIFF and made a few stylistic enhancements to the color and detail, added a vignette, and a subtle glow.

That’s it! I think this version is a huge improvement. What do you think?
